Class of 1976 when the traditions set in place long before us continued to be very strong. I remember my siblings being 7+ years older than myself, would come home with these orange and blue hats (tams), sweaters, jackets with metals sewn on them; year books—all kinds of memorabilia. Talk about, The Dug-out, Tick-Tock, Garrett’s Ice Cream for Pizza. I couldn’t wait to go to Balboa, too. They appeared to have had enjoyed going to school. The 1976 class won All
City Track,
City Basketball,
City Football (Turkey Day) even Drill Team events. In celebration of the Bicentennial Year; the service station Union 76 donated little styrofoam balls that could be placed on exterior antennas our slogan, The Spirit of 76. What an experience I had from 1974-1976. It was really nice to visit this website. It was actually passed to me by my sister who attended in 1970. Our family has several generations of Balboa Buc’s. Thanks for sharing. I’ll be passing this along to classmates with whom I’m still in contact. I’d very much like to get another year book for 1976. Thank you again for the memories.

Getting hair braided in the bleachers before a football game by the "girls"! Campus cop "Redeye". Drag racing down Brotherhood Way. Connie Davis and Alba Escobar were babes. Saturday and the school was open. I found my old locker and most of all remembered a session I had with my counselor. He told me I just as soon lay carpet like my dad as I would never amount to anything and suggested I join the army after graduation. Well, I did join the Navy went to Viet Nam, came home got my Masters Degree, and taught school for a while. Today I am a maritime captain, teach scuba on the side, retired at 54, live on a sailboat in Marina del Rey. Grown kids and I guess well that counselor said what I needed to hear. I'll never amount to anything. Hope all of you are well... How time flies with days merged into months and years morph into decades. Sitting here on the new millennium looking back to the 60s decade with such clarity, it is so tempting to change a million little things. However, one can only look back but not go back. The sixties decade, like no other decades for this Baby Boomer, was such a unique, fresh, optimistic, creative and energetic period. It was also so convoluted, confusing, tragic and bittersweet. The sixties also denoted the turning point in our cultural values. Now I have a few wine sipping, BMW driving, Bush hating Liberal friends on the left side of this country, leaning all so much more to the left than a one legged Balboa Buccaneer. As for me, the 60s started with the end of Guadalupe Elementary and the beginning of James Denman Junior High with Balboa High somewhere before the middle and college toward the end of the decade. The Balboa High experience was part and parcel of the Crocker Amazon and the Outer Mission experience. It was centered on Geneva and Mission with the corner butcher shop and drug store, the army surplus, the old Mel’s Drive-In on Mission and Pope and the pool hall next to it. It was the Amazon Theater with endless re-runs of beloved B movies with the likes of It Came from Outer Space, The Blob, and variations on Werewolf, Vampire and Frankenstein. It was softball on the neighborhood streets - or street rock fighting with a gang of friends, which pissed all the adults off - touch football in Crocker Amazon Playground or just goofing off with the swing sets on the Longfellow Elementary sand lot. It was hiking in the Black Hills (now San Bruno State Park) and picking wild blackberries or trying to steal a horseback ride form an absentee farmer or just hiking to the Geneva drive-in theater West of Cow Palace to get a soft drink or some such. It was KFRC, KYA and the bodacious KDIA. The 60s was so much more and was also so tragic. A classmate from Guadalupe Elementary was killed via drive-by shooting during lunch hour on the popular Tick Tock hangout on Ocean Avenue. During one of my numerous bonehead, remedial classes we heard the sad news that the President was shot. On that day our youthful exhurberence, hope and optimism were taken out of our sails. For the next week the country was in deep mourning. With the Vietnam War looming in the background during my senior year, some classmates wanted to enlist in the Marines as the final bastion into manhood. I hope they came home unscathed and growing old like me. No country on this planet could face our military machine head on but what’s tragic was the lost on the home front due to indifference, sensitivity, peace at any cause, drug induced reality and political correctness. Who needs enemies when you have Jane Fonda arming anti-aircraft guns? Electri
City was in the air and things were moving so fast from the middle of the decade on. It was about long hair, rock-n-roll, protests and Vietnam, drugs, race riots, Black Power and Black Studies, sex and do whatever feels good. We were a country in trouble, both in a foreign war and in domestic upheaval. It was the beginning of the counter culture. It was also the beginning of the demise of family values, nationalism, religion and our industrial production capabilities. Fast forward four decades, we are now living in interesting but dangerous times. San Francisco is becoming the number one homicide
City in the Bay Area. And what? Nancy Pelosi for president? We also have six decades of a failed welfare system and failure over four decades on the war on drugs. It would be cheaper and more constructive just to give every welfare recipients a million dollars and sent them off in BMWs to Harvard or MIT. Relative to September 11, we are a nation of people with too many rights but too little responsibilities as to balance liberty with safety. And where well Social Security be when we reach 65? At any rate, after Bal I had the option of Vietnam, pumping gas, grocery stock boy or college. As an incorrigible Balboa underachiever and with my poor grades, college didn’t seem to be a viable option but I went anyway just to stop my parents from nagging. I’m so grateful for them for the encouragement. CCSF was not their first choice but it was the best I could do with my not so stellar GPA. As it turned out CCSF was a pretty good and practical junior college. Anyway I met my sweetheart in graduate school and we were married when I was working in Georgia. That photo with SFPD "that wasn't in any yearbooks", I remember being herded with others out of classrooms and trapped on the 3rd floor main bldg. hallway (for safety) while all the rioting and violence with police went on outside.
