ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE VASTLY IMPROVED! WAIT LIST TO BE ADMITTED!
BALBOA NOW A SCHOOL OF CHOICE! by Nick Kafkas

Balboa has improved its academic standing, and based on the California API scores it is set to match or
surpass two other highly rated high schools in San Francisco. A change is that is due to the hard work of
the faculty, former Principal Patricia Gray, the students and, the even- handed new Balboa Principal,
Mr. Kevin Kerr.

1) Last year among 17 public (and charter) high schools Balboa was number 6; Balboa could rise this
Spring above 2 other schools.

2) Number of Advanced Placement Classes is now ten including Statistics, Calculus, Chinese, Spanish,
Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, World History and Literature.

3) Five pathways are offered to students in the 11th and 12th grades in Small Learning Communities:

a) Visual and Performing Arts including media arts and animation; b) Wilderness Arts and Literacy
Academy including Environmental Science; c) Academy of Information Technology; d) Law Academy
includes interaction with the Bar Association and summer law internships; d) International Pathway.

4) A young dedicated, innovative and energetic faculty and administration. Example: Physics for ALL 9th
graders; morning study hall for all students.

5) Excellent support for students: A fine and caring counseling staff, a Parent Liaison Center; Peer
Resources; a Teen Clinic offering complete service ••• A vast array of school clubs, including a
reinvigorated California Scholarship Federation with 145 members; School to College assistance
(applications and scholarships), PACT {financial aid and career counseling, AACE (field trips to college
campuses, SAT prep, and more) 96.8 % of Balboa seniors attend college. Recent Successes •" The
Balboa Debate Team won the Bay Area Urban Debate League qualifying tournament and two senior
students Zach Delle and Alan Chin, will attend the national debate competition in NYC this April ••••
Balboa JROTC took overall title in the SFUSD Annual JROTC competition ••• cheerleaders take first
place in the cheer and dance competition at Kezar.

Community Service is required. Every student must complete 100 hours over 4 years, of approved
community service; this is now a requirement of many colleges and universities.

Balboa High School,   known as Bal, is an American public high school located near the Excelsior District in the Mission Terrace neighborhood of San Francisco, California. Balboa serves grades nine through twelve as part of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD).

Balboa is a comprehensive school located in an urban working class district. It educates a greater proportion of the city's disadvantaged and minority students relative to other city high schools. Mirroring conditions in the areas it serves, the school has a history marked by periods of violence, controversy, and low academic performance.

The school motto is "First on the Pacific". The campus is the only historic landmark school in the district and the only one operating in the city. Following the dismissal of the entire faculty in 1999, it became the first school in Northern California to embrace and convert its curriculum to the concept of small learning communities. It was the first in California to start a school-based student health clinic. In response to the AIDS pandemic, it was the first school in California to distribute free condoms to students. In the last decade, Balboa has experienced a turnaround and has improved its reputation and academic performance. The school achieved placement on Newsweek's "America's Top Public High Schools" list in 2007 and 2008.

Balboa Buccaneer Football

2009 Schedule

My name is Theresa Flores.  I am a Buccaneer, class of 1990.  My parents, sister and now my son are all Bucs. You may remember our family attending the variety shows and the recent alumni picnic.  My mom, Pamela and I are on the football Boosters Club.

I would like to request that the new football season schedule be posted on the alumni website.  Maybe you could add a note encouraging folks to support the team by coming out for a fun Friday or Saturday afternoon game.  The new coaching staff and the boys have worked hard all spring and summer and we think this is going to be an exciting season. The field has been groomed, the track and bleachers have been replaced too.

I have placed a note on the message board on the classmates.com website and hope that you can help get the word out as well.  It sure would be nice to see the stands full of supporters.  I think it would mean a lot to the kids.  It's been 25 years since the Bucs took Turkey Day.  I think we're due and more support from the alumni might just make the difference.

Please help me get the message out.

Kindest regards,

Theresa

ROTC

Balboa has six JROTC companies (classes) with five of them meeting each day, five days a week. Balboa has a before and after school class from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 pm, respectively everyday. Balboa's Drum Corps are well-known for receiving first place in the SFUSD Brigade Fall Liberty Ball Competition for over a decade during the 80's, 90's, and early 2000s. Balboa constantly participates in physical activity challenges in its Raiders Team, individual drill-down competitions, guidon flag drill and other drilling and marching exhibitions. Balboa's special teams participate and perform in many parades where it is well known and award winning such as the annual San Francisco Veterans Day Parade, the Excelsior District Festival and the annual 91st or spring drill competition in the Presidio.

The Balboa Battalion and its cadet corps of approximately 225 cadets volunteer extensively in different service learning projects and community service projects coordinated by the battalion staff of student officers and the army instructors. The battalion donates canned food items and toys to annual holiday food and toy drives where it has gained notoriety among the Student Association for amassing large amounts of food for the drive; because of this, the Balboa Battalion sponsors and puts together the food drive each year at Balboa. Balboa's JROTC participates in the city-wide beach clean up annually, as well as cleaning up the school campus on a regular basis several times a month. The Balboa Battalion is a familiar face in each Earth Day event at Balboa, where cadets volunteer and clean the school. The JROTC program participates in service learning programs such as training in the Neighborhood Emergency Response Team to respond to any emergency event that may happen within the city or the school to keep fellow cadets and students alike of Balboa High School safe.
