PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 2010 Spring
By Emily Powell F'46

HERE'S SOME OF WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING:

I can't believe how busy we've been since the publication of our last Gangplank in
August 2009! In a "nutshell" here are some highlights; Homecoming Game vs James
Logan High of Union City, October 17th. O.k., so we lost,
(but those fellows were really big!)
Our Bucs put up a good fight. The weather was glorious; the stands were
filled; great entertainment by the JROTC, the band and our cheer leaders. The PTSA
and the Boosters made record sales of food, as did the alumni association of Balboa
shirts and sweats.

We were proud to announce that the main office will henceforth be
known as the Dr. Patricia Gray Main Office. The new plaque was presented by
Candace Anderson (PTSA president) and Emily Powell and Nick Kafkas, (on behalf
of the alumni). Presentations to Dr. Gray were also made by Senator Leland Yee, and
Supervisor John Avalos. S.A. President, Brian Leung gave Dr. Gray a bouquet of
flowers. Then, our new principal, Kevin Kerr, was introduced.

Annual Picnic, August 1st, thanks to chief chefs Joseph Belfrey (78), Leroy Miranda (79) and Kevin Tucker (79) was the best ever (don't miss it this year).

Cruise to Alaska, August 2nd - - Forty-two Bucs had the time of their lives.

Athletic Hall of Fame/Merit Awards Dinner, held on October 24, 2009. Several hundred Bucs honored the Fame and Merit inductees and helped make our first silent auction a huge success. We commend the organizers of the 1978/79; 1969/70; S'59; F'59; and 1989 classes for their class reunions. We commend the Balboa Geezers, the Athletic Legends, and the many
other small groups of Bucs that meet and hang out together through the year. By the
time you have received this Gangplank information, we also would have had our 40th annual
Alumni vs Varsity Basketball Game, January 30th 2009 (Joe Belfrey Alumni Captain)
and the annual baseball dinner on February 13th headed by Bob Volkert (S'52) and
Joe Rodriguez(F'61).

HERE'S SOME OF WHAT'S COMING UP:(see announcement Page for More)

Now, in a "nutshell" here's what's coming up (also periodically check this web site for
up-to-date and "new" news.) April 22 in the Library, Annual Meeting of Members,
6:45 p.m. Election of officers and directors and celebration of the alumni's 40th
birthday. Yes, it was on April 16, 1970 that Nick Kafkas and the 100 Bucs Service
Society organized our alumni association. Arrive at 6:00 for a tour of our museum.
Contact Dorothy at 707-762-6162 for daylime tour.

May 15th Annual Variety show at 1:30 in our Calvin Simmons Auditorium. Marie, our telephone chairperson is making
calls for specially priced tickets. Arrive at 12:30 for photo shots in front of school and to
tour our museum. (See details in this issue of Gangplank). Our talented web kahuna, Kip Brockman,
reports that the class of Fall 1967 plans to attend the show en masse to celebrate being 60
years old!

May 15th, Jerry Stack ('52) will be inducted into the S.F. Prep Hall of Fame
at the Patio Espanol. Tickets $45. If you want to sit at the alumni table call Emily at
650-851-8101.

June 2nd, Move-Up Assembly. 10:30. Reserved section in auditorium
for alumni in left front. Museum open 11:45.

July 14th, Annual Legends Golf
Tournament, Sharps Park Golf Course, followed by dinner. The "original Legends", of
the late 30's and early 40's, Artie Dikas, Bob Antraccoli, Paul Gandolfi and Bob
Becker have passed the "Baton of leadership" to Rich Quesada ('74) (415-681-4141)
(richardJquesada@aol.com) and committee members Carlos and Jorge Aquinos.
They expect the old timers to play, but very much look forward to phone calls from new
golfers. Then come to our Annual Picnic, August 7th, San Bruno City Park, Site 7.
Tony Boyadzis (650/872-0470) and Ted Luff encourage all S'60 grads to attend - to
get all spirited up for the S'60 reunion that same evening at the So. San Francisco
Convention Center.

The big event of 2010 will be our Athletic Hall of Fame/Hall of
Merit Awards Banquet, Saturday, October 23rd, Patio Espanol, S.F. For Hall of
Merit nomination forms Contact Emily Powell (650/851-8101). For Hall of Fame
nomination forms contact Joe Rodriguez (work: 650/636-0108) or write to our P.O.
address. We know that Coach Archie Chagonjian's First Championship Football
Team (1967) will be honored en masse, with presentations made by Lidia Franco
Chagonjian ('51). Team members, please contact Don Garduno (S"63) 415/469-4914.
Official announcement of inductees and reservation form will be in the August
Gangplank.

We welcome new board member, David Camacho ("79), and two new alternate
members: Tony Boyadzis (S'60) and Marcia Parrott (F'63). Come to our annual
meeting in the library and meet the alums who work so hard to keep the "good ship
Galleon" afloat.

Thanks to all of you Bucs out there who support our alumni association in its work to
make Balboa better and better.

Emily Powell (650/851-8101)
