ALUMNI CHALLENGES VARSITY
HOOPERS The Balboa Alumni basketball team will never give upl For
the fourth year in a row, it will play the Balboa Varsity and this
time will play to wini That's what Danny Knight, F'69 and Mike Salem,
F'69, co-coaches for the Alumni team are saying despite the fact that
Bal's Coach Dave Roberts and his team feel pretty confident. (We hate to
admit it, but we've lost to the varsity three years in a row, but by a
very narrow margin.) The game will be held on Friday, December 14,1973
in the City College Men's Gym at 8 p.m. (See full page with details
elsewhere in the Gangplank.) If you've missed the previous games, you've
really missed something. It's an evening you and your entire family and
friends will enjoy. You may even come away with a hoarse throat from
yelling. There will be action and excitement, refreshments, music by Balboa's band AND, you will be helping us in our fund raising ef-
forts. So, don't forget the date, FRIDAY, DECEMBER l4, 1973. You have
lots of time to practice up on our old school yells that you know so
well. PLAYERS ARE NEEDED. If you can be a player or wish to
participate in some way please call; Emily Powell Sumrall, 826-8046;
Steve Kirwin, S'73» '333-53^1; or Faculty Advisor at Balboa Nick Kafkas,

Yes, that's right If Proposition A, on the ballot in San Francisco
City and County, does not pass, Balboa High is on the list to be closed.
According to the Field Act of 1933, Bal and almost 50 other schools must
be brought up to certain structural standards. The bond issue is only
for earthquakeproofing - no modernization or changes. Although the
Alumni Board of Directors generally takes no political positions, the
Board of Directors passed unanimously a resolution urging all San
Francisco voters to approve Proposition A since it directly affects Bal-
boa. Get out and vote on Nov. 6 ,1973 for Prop. A and get your friends to
vote too. SAVE BALBOA! Nov 1973 |

| THE PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
by Frank Galo Rising costs have hit Balboa Alumni and soon membership fees will have to go up, just like everything else, Right now we are in the middle of a membership drive for both the Alumni and the Boosters. What better time to join, re-new or convert to life- time before the new rates go into effect. Most of you readers are members already, but what about your friends? It is amazing the number of Balboa grads who still do not know that our organization exists, Spread the word around or pass on this newsletter. We have a good thing going. We have all the social events that other alumni's have and in addition, we are involved with today's students as well. Through our Student Advisory Committee we have helped to improve morale and conditions at Balboa. Our recent plea for enforced graduation requirements hit the news media and both City Hall and the Board of Education are very much aware of our existence. In other words, we are here to stay and you can become a part of our growth. Sign up a friend now;,...,As for the Balboa Boosters, not enough can be said. It is a sports-oriented organization with open membership. You don't have to be a Balboan to join. For as little as a dollar you can become a Balboa Booster, yet many of the alumni have yet to join. If you haven't, join today and sign up a friend. Membership gives you a card, free admission to Balboa home games, and a newsletter devoted to detailed Balboa sports. The money goes toward athletic awards and equipment, and that includes girls* P.E. (The next Booster newsletter features an article on Balboa's Girls' P.E. Dept,) Too often we think about signing up and then let it go. Join this very minute, In a letter to it's alumni, Mission commended Balboa for it's smooth organization and speculated on the idea of having a joint Balboa-Mission venture in the future. What do you think? Write in and let us know. We appreciate your letters. PAT HARRY BIG LIQUOR WINNER The liquor raffle was held at the Board of Directors meeting on Sept. 20, Winner of 1 case of liquor was Pat Harry. Winners of 1 bottle of liquor each were Emily Sumrall, Joe San Lorenzo, T. Picchi, Al Rivera, Robert Rickard, Joe Perrone, E, Santistevani, Carl Mirkovich, Bert A., Dennis Fekite, Louis Cosentino and Joe Newman, We are sorry some of the names are not complete, but that is the way they signed their ticket. SPECIAL OFFER FOR EXCELSIOR STAMPS Walt Jebe, of Jebe's Camera Shop on Mission St., has made the Alumni, a special offer. He will give us double value for the Excelsior Blue Stamp books. So if you have any Excelsior Blue Stamps or complete books or partly filled books you would like to donate for our fund-raising, we would be grateful. Just send them to the Alumni office, A big thanks to the following for donating Blue Chip, S & H Green, and Excelsior Blue stamps: Gloria Cava Troup, Myrtle Jenssen Lane, F. W. Schwarz, Bill Magidson and Catherine Martin Porter. ALUMNI SPONSORS PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS Each semester the Alumni tries to sponsor a program of top entertainment for Balboa students. This semesters program was on September 20, when five members of the cast of "Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope" came to perform. They did some numbers from the play, gospel numbers and other favorites. The show played under the auspices of A.C.T. at the Geary Theater in San Francisco to packed houses for many weeks. Shiela Ellis, F'70 Balboa graduate came, along with Billy Dorsey, Hannah Dean and Larry Nance. Shiela is now on tour with the cast, stopping in Boston and St, Louis. The Alumni presented the show in co-operation with the Student Association, Nearly 700 S.A. cards were sold, and since the auditorium does not have seats for the entire school, the S.A, card holders met and were entertained by the group. |

| IN MEMORIAM Buccaneer Obituaries Bob Stewart, class of June 1934, died on June 27, 1973. Annette Bailey Spring 1971, died on-September 7, 1973* Lester Power, teacher at Balboa from August 1929 through June of 1963, died on September 20, 1973. Mr. Power first taught in the Foreign Language Department and later in the Business Department, An Alumni Memorial Scholarship in memory of Mr. Power has been established since a substantial amount of money for that purpose has been received from former and present faculty members. Miss Mabel_E. White who was librarian at Balboa for a few years beginning in Fall 1935 and later transfered, died on Oct. 20, 1973. Mr. Ned Hardin, who taught at Balboa since September 1958, died on October 7, 1973. He had been chairman of the Music Department for many years. He was most popular among students and faculty, and was Faculty Advisor to the S'68 class. "FAREWELL TO NED HARD IN" by Carol Lenzini, S'72 In September of 1958 a new face arrived at Balboa. An addition to the faculty and an asset to the Music Department, Ned Hardin found a place in everyone's heart who knew or was just aquainted with him. Always interested in the students - their happiness and welfare - Ned was greatly loved and respected. Music was an important thing to him. It was something he wanted to share with everyone. The Balboa Choir had been known for many years around the City as a quality choir. By understanding the students' problems and being so patient with them, the students returned their thanks by being truly singers in all respects. It couldn't have been if it weren't for Ned, for he had great pride in being a part of Balboa. Now that he is gone, and for those of us who knew and loved him, we'd like to have the music trophy as a permanent memorial in his name. We hope that you will contribute to the Alumni Music Scholarship so that a Music Scholarship, may be given in his memory to a music student of the next graduating class. I have already sent in my contribution and I hope that you will help make this dream of mine a reality, |
