Editorials Vietnam War and the Draft

Good Morning
Mr. Spone

-You walk into the bathroom,
spread that goopy stuff
all over yourself
and comb your hair.

-You wear the latest clothes,
use the latest scent,
and walk as if a ruler
were the line behind your back.

-They don't see you as yourself,

but in the mirror, Mr. Spone.

"WAR GAME"

A flash-twelve times brighter than day as a child looks up, and
his eyes melt from the heat.

Recently a group of students from Bdboa watched the film "War
Game", a motion picture made in a documentary fashion, at the Surf
Theater. Reactions were mixed; to one student at least it seemed too
real; she wanted to throw up.

The surrounding air was destroyed as fire storms sucking people.
into fourteen hundred degree heat was replaced with deadly gases.

"War Game " must be a fifty minute celluloid illusion; nothing so
fantastic, so terrifying could ever happen-or could it? "War Game"
Is based on real events from World War n and a conjecture on what
probably would happen in the event of a thermal nuclear attack.

Thickly crusted, partly covered in charred cloth, motionless in a
gutter. Once a man.

Or Is "War Game" entertaining? Like "Frankenstein" or "The
Mummy", perhaps just an absurd monster flick. Some in the audience thought so.

Housewives murdering for a few tins of food. "People dying of
radiation sickness. Many people could not under stand . Plastic
worn be of security exploding in burnt faces, now wandering in neurosis to the end of their existence.

Even in the theater, plastic wombs were pierced, horrified. Will
a real "War Game" happen here?

Orphaned children to inherit a surrealistic nightmare, not wanting anything, only perhaps to be dead.

Hundred Bucs or Teacher Control
by: Tim Gaar

"R-E-S-P-E-C-T," find out what It means to me. Maybe this
song was being sung to Balboa for the benefit of the 100 Bucs, 'cause
right now this is what this organization needs , a little respect, and
If they don't get it soon, student control will eventually be done away
with.

When the 100 Bucs were organized by Mr.Ryan .they were set up
for student control at rallies and assemblies and for patrolling the
halls ai; lunch. All of these duties were set up to take some of the
pressure off the teachers. That was six years ago and the 100 Bucs
do exactly the same today, at least that is what the rules say, but
now it obvious that the procedure has changed greatly. For ex--
ample, how many times have you been at a rally when a 100 Buc has
been forced to remove someone for a particular reason First an
argument takes place, then the student is removed and finally an
outbreak of violence results. Just recently, at a rally that wasn't
particularly good, a group of students decided that they had had
enough, so between fifty and seventy-five promptly got up and walked
out unstopped. The job of the 100 Bucs was to put these kids either
back In the rally or In a study hall, but since there were only about
fifty 100 Bucs in the entire auditorium, in which more than half were
girls, the task. that followed was both difficult and hopeless and the
100 Bucs went down to defeat.

If these actions continue to happen in the future, student control
will be done away -with and every time there Is a rally you will be
forced to go with a teacher, sit in an assigned section, and when the
rally is over you will be marched back to your assigned class. This
will eventually happen if the constant harrassment of the 100 Bucs
continues.

Please, for the sake of the student body of Balboa, lets not let this
school turn into a typical high school, because this is your school.

Magic Number

by: Sandy Veneigh

I am now at that age where past, present, and
future are intertwined into one mass of confusion.
My three feet are marching to the tune of growing
ttp. One foot in childhood, one In adulthood, and
the other In the grip of Society.

"Society" the Invisible ring around the masses.
The masses of what? Human beings. Holy Scriptares of past decaying Societies, or everyone in general? No, around numbers . And by those
washers we we Judged- trled and - convlcted.

Our telltale ring Is hooked on twenty-one.
Twenty-one-that magic number where you or I can
go out and vote or get drunk, but not necessarily
in that same order. At twenty-one we are supposed
to be mature enough to know right from wrong, wise
enough to choose good from bad. and scared enough
not to question What we feel should be looked Into,
or should I say, scared enough not to act upon our
questioning.

The reason why this generation, like all other
young generations before us are called rebels and
other loose terms, is because -we In our own way
act upon our questioning. Now I am not saying I
go whole heartedly with the way this generation
seems to be solving the mysteries of life but, as
being young has obstacles, it also comes with a very
comfortable cushion. Today Instead of fighting the
enemy on his own ground, we just "Drop-out", and
there is nothing worse than trying to destroy something that is not there. We go in our little herds and "Blow our minds " to keep from facing our

"Maker" so to speak. Since fighting back or ignoring is not condoned by the over 21 clan.

Advisor Comments
The war in Vietnam and the draft which sends young men to fight
there have produced a controversy about which no one seems neutral.
The Buccaneer, attempting to understand and evaluate what the whole
controversy means, presents here two divergent points of view.
Since each of these writers seems to ignore certain vital points which
the other holds true, the truth of the matter can only be revealed
through a free and open discussion, and we encourage all readers to
express themselves regarding this most vital question by writing
letters to the Buccaneer.

The anti-draft writer must certainly express how many young men
feel regarding a future which might hold only death in a far off place
without understanding why, while the pro-draft writer emphasizes the
notion that the anti-draft writer would not even have the freedom to
protest the draft had not good men given their lives to secure and
protect that freedom. The question which should be debated may
involve something wore fundamental than either of these young men
have expressed, namely that of morality. Just what is right ? How
can we find that out ?

PRO
by: Tim Gaar

The United States of America is the greatest
country to live la on the face of the earth today.
Yet, In this country during •Bis last few years there
have been strong anti-war protests, antl-government protests. satA protoflfcs, just to be protesting.
Granted all men have the right to dissent, but do
all men have the right to be anti-patriotic to the
point of treason?

The United States of America will eventually be
doomed if the present trend of protesting continues.
The only way that our great country can survive la
for all the people to give total support to governmental policies. H this is not done then eventually
revolutionists will inevitably take over our country and set up whatever those individuals in power.
want ittastroying our country.

One of the primary political controversies is
the draft. It la the policy of the Un it e d States
Government to draft all eligible men over the age
'-if eighteen and under" twenty-six; they must be in
good physical condition., and fairly straight. The
average person is asked to give up four years of
Ms life in the military and when this i s completed
he once again becomes a free man. Is that such a
great price to pap to live in this country, to live
file Ufe you chose 7 Of course not, yet certain in-
dividuals believe it is and these are the people who
are doing the protesting. One must not forget that
the people who are doing the protesting are but a
small minority compared to the overwhelming
mass who support their government.

Hall the draft dodgers and draft protestors etc.,
were sent to Russia, China, Cuba, or most any
other country, they would be unable to speak out
against that government, they would be shut up or
shot-down. Facing that, these protestors would
realize that the United States Government isn't as
bad as they think it is. Remember, this is the
home of the free and the land of the brave, and the
test for true citizenship is only foar years of your
life. Just think what the answer would be if the
people in the Iron Curtain countries had the same
choice as here in America, we all know that they
would chose to be free like we are here in America.

CON

by: Don Gardner

As I face the future, there's a shadow hanging
over me, a huge, black, oppressive cloud which
threatens to destroy my future plans or end my
life altogether. It is the draft, and if is the
greatest evil in the United States today.

When a boy reaches the age of eighteen, be
becomes eligible for the draft. Unless he is
mentally defective, a homosexual, or can prove
that he is a conscientious objector, he will be
forced to serve in the armed forces. But I
shouldn't say he's forced; since this is a
democracy and he has a choice. His choice being
that he can also rot for five years in a federal
prison if he refuses to serve.

So, when you become eighteen, your life no
longer belongs to you. You become a pawn of the
government, eating when the government tells you
to eat, sleeping when the government tells you to
sleep, jumping when the government t el Is you to
jump, and when the time comes and you've been
trained properly, killing when the government
tells you to kill. You are dehumanized to the
point where you begin to see human belngs as
military objectives which will be destroyed if the
order la given or Ignored if you are so commanded. You will become a machine, crushing out human lives. But, worst of all, you won't
even be your own machine: you will belong to the
United States government. If the government
decides your life is expendable, then that's what
your life becomes. In the army your life is meaningless. You're just another soldier, like everyone else, and if you get killed, well, that's too bad, but there's always somebody to replace you.

If you are eighteen this is what the future holds
in store for you. Yet, you are told that if you
complain or if you want to fight this policy you
should be shot or imprisoned. But this is wrong.
Rather, it's a crime if you don't believe in the draft
yet go along with it. Wars might be won by the
stunning tactics of brilliant generals, but wars are
fought by common soldiers, men who say, "I don't
believe in war but if you get drafted you have to go.
There's nothing you can do about It." This is so
wrong. There is something you can do about it.
You can fight the draft. If enough people oppose
this policy it can be changed. Remember: You only have one life-does it belong to you or the government?
