| 100 Bucs Service Society In the Fall of 1960, a faculty committee at Balboa High recommended establishment of a service society to replace the Boys and Girls Council. As a result Mr. Philip Ryan, S.A. sponsor, began the 100 Bucs Service Society in the Spring of 1961. Mr. Nick Kafkas became sponsor of the group in the Fall of 1961. Today, Balboa's only student control organization, the 100 Bucs, continues to patrol during rallies and lunch. Those who request membership petition toward the end of the term and a rating committee selects the most qualified petitioners for membership. Petitioners are rated for their participation in school and class activities, their service to the school, citizenship, and their scholastic standing. With these qualifications the members have proven dependable and responsible. One thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve. — Dr. Schweitzer |
