BIO's on the five 2009 Bal Athletic Hall of Fame inductees and the 1967 basketball team.

***Athletic HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES: 2009
 
ANGELO PASTORINO ('51):  1st Team All-City baseball, unanimous choice of all City newspapers, as a hard hitting first baseman.  Played in the East vs. West All-Star game in '51.
 
BILL RATHBUN (F'55):  1st Team All-City football (fullback) in '55, and one of the City's highly regarded players.  Recipient of the Pterodactyl trophy.  College ball at CCSF.
 
DARRELL FREGIA (S'67):  Helped lead Bal to it's 1st basketball title in '67.  1st Team All-City, AAA's Co-Player of the Year, All-Northern California.  Played at Stanford.
 
TONY GRAHAM ('73):  Tony, a soccer standout for (3) years, was a 1st Team All-City selection and Pterodactyl winner in his senior year.  He went on to play for USF's National championship team in 1976 before a successful professional career.
 
GEORGE ISMAEL ('92):  Two time 1st All-City in football, Lineman of the Year and 2nd Team Defensive unit - All Bay Area Team.  All-City shot putter in '92 (2nd place).  College football at National champion CCSF and at Florida A & M.
 
1ST VARSITY BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM - 1967: * 
Coach Orron Qualls finally hit pay dirt in '67 as his talented Bucs clipped Poly 54-51 for the Bal's 1st varsity title and 1st T.O.C. appearance.  Darrell Fregia and Pat Hamm were 1st Team All-City choices and shared Co-Player of the Year honors.  The Team, as a whole, will be honored.  But, we need your help in locating the following players.  Our information shows that the following were on the roster:  Rego Ayala, Larry Camp, Tom Clyburn, E. Grinton, Artie McClean, Tom Shelton, R. Alan, Damon Chatman, Pat Hamm, Joe Bosia, Donald Clyburn, T. Mexiner, Matt Travers and Ron Stewart.  Team manager was Ted Pallas.

HALL OF MERIT

BARRY ABELSON (S'54) Community Service. President and
founder of Abelson Aluminum Industries. President of "Pro Lift"
(alternate transportation for the disabled), actively involved in
many charitable and philanthropic organizations such as
Multiple Sclerosis Society, Habitat for Humanities and more.
Involved in energy conservation projects for the Ontario. Canada
community

ALVIN DUSKIN (S'48) Environmental Concerns. For over 35
years founded and worked with various companies which
focused on new energy projects, conservation, and the
protection of our environment. Co-founded and developed the
first and largest windfarm in the world at Altamont, California..
Currently is CEO of Direct Carbon Technologies, a company that
is now in production of prototype fuel cells that convert biomass
and coal to electricity without emissions

TED PALLAS (F'46) Heroism, Author. Korean War hero. Injured
prisoner of war and survivor of a horrendous experience in
prison camp, during which time he found creative and
compassionate ways to give hope to his fellow prisoners. Out of
this experience, he became a poet and author of a book of his
memoirs of that "Forgotten War". At Balboa, he was on the
varsity football team.

JUDGE CYNTHIA GEORGE (S'65) Government. Law. Retired
judge. Attorney with the Central California Legal Services, an
advocate for low income communities. First African American
attorney to practice law in Fresno County. Philosophy professor
at Fresno State.

JOHN KIRAMIS (F'69) Public Affairs. Government. City Council
member and current Mayor of Foster City. A career in law
enforcement - Hillsborough and the Foster City Police
Departments. Recognized for his work for and his concern for
his community.

LEROY MIRANDA ('79) Community Service. Recipient of
Commendation from the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo
County for outstanding service with the San Mateo Police
Activities League coaching soccer. He is noted for bringing to
teens the highest level of youth development — teaching basic
life skills - respect, effort, self-direction and leadership. Was an
outstanding soccer player at Balboa and after graduation.

HALL OF MERIT SPECIAL RECOGNITION

ROXIE FOOD CENTER. Owners, Simon, Peter, Tony, and
Costa Tannous will be honored for their many years of support
and service to Balboa's coaches, athletes and our sports programs
In countless ways. Will also be honored for their dedicated
service to our community.— bringing festive activities and
enjoyment to our families during holidays.
